La Cueva Family Healthcare

At La Cueva Family Healthcare, Dr. Marissa Romero PharmD, CFNP and Geoffrey Steffens, CFNP aim to bring quality primary care to an area of town underprovided with such a service. “When we began looking for a location for our practice,” says Geoff, “I noticed how few primary care facilities there were in the far Northeast Heights and Albuquerque Acres area.”

LCFH strives to create a central home of primary care for families. Both nurse practitioners and Lobo alums who credit their success to the UNM College of Nursing and the UNM College of Pharmacy, Marissa and Geoff came from El Pueblo Health Service in Bernalillo. Wanting to create a small and family-oriented practice, LCFH’s office holds a staff of only four, including both providers. “We aim to keep the personal touch,” says Dr. Romero. “Quality over quantity, shorter waits, and knowing we are available if our patients need us—that’s what’s important at LCFH.”

Here in New Mexico, nurse practitioners are granted independent practice and therefore can diagnose, prescribe and provide primary health care for patients of all ages. “Here at our facility,” Geoff says, “we can manage everything from acute care to chronic disease states, however, if and when there is a need to refer, we have some great relationships with local specialists.” Given their network contacts, patients are referred to the best providers in town. “I’m really lucky to have worked with some great talent in the city of Albuquerque,” says Geoff.

Both Marissa and Geoff have children attending APS La Cueva cluster schools and have strong ties to the community. Staying involved in their children’s activities keeps them busy, as well as connected and in tune with the needs of the community. “Access to health care is an important part of well-being and good health,” Marissa says.
